PROJECT BRIEF
Prompt
Find a company or product that has sustainability issues and design solutions that combat those issues.
Find a company or product that has sustainability issues and design solutions that combat those issues.
Subject Matter
CeraVe (Skincare Brand) - Facial Cleanser
CeraVe (Skincare Brand) - Facial Cleanser
Problem
CeraVe is not a sustainable brand because they use non-recycleable plastic. They are a popular, affordable brand, so having a huge fan base has a negative impact on the environment. How could I re-design their products to be sustainable, but keep the branding? If they were to be sustainable, what are the best materials handle skincare products since they contain water?

Solution
I will be designing a reusable and recyclable version of CeraVe's facial cleanser that still has similar quality as the original.

Phase 1. Research
Company Research
It's important that I researched about CeraVe to keep the packaging design cohesive with the branding.

How can sustainable packaging benefit the company?
• Promotes a good cause.
• Helps the environment by lessening amount of plastic used.
• Works well with their motive of simple packaging design and focus of helping the Earth.
• Attract more consumers, especially those who (1) reuse to buy from a company that is not environmentally friendly and/or (2) interested in skincare that looks aesthetically pleasing.

Industry Research
I also conducted research on sustainable packaging trends in the skincare industry to understand what materials are typically used and ideal for these types of products.

Korean & Japanese Skincare
Korean & Japanese skincare are a good example of simple packaging and sustainability. The major of Korean and Japanese brands are eco-conscious. Because of these reasons, their product's popularity are on the rise.

Packaging Designs I Noticed:
Recyclable materials / Refill packs to continue using the same bottle / Minimalistic print (mainly text, little to no images).

Phase 2. Design Development
Package Materials
How would it be constructed?
• Virgin Kraft Paper will be the most outer layer - what consumers are able to see.
• The plastics (BOPP and PP) are underneath as an inner, thin layer. It will hold the amount of fluid that the original bottom can carry safely.
• Any caps or pumps would be made out of polypropylene plastic (PP).

Sustainable Design Concepts
I had 2 concepts in mind to choose from. Both are great sustainable methods, but I had to consider:
1. What is more convenient for consumers?
2. What are consumers used to?
3. Which would use less materials in the long run?

Reflection
Coming up with a unique sustainable solution was a challenge, but it did strength my UX design and research skills. It was different from all of the projects I've done in the past, so it was refreshing to try something outside of my comfort zone. While this is only a conceptual product/package design, this could lead to skincare companies heading in a more eco-friendly direction!
